EDITORIAL ETHICS

At Hoofddorp Research Center, we are committed to the highest standards of editorial integrity. Our Editorial Ethics guidelines ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability in the publishing process. These principles govern how our editorial team handles manuscripts, reviews, and decisions.

1. Editorial Decision-Making

  • Impartiality: Editors make publication decisions solely based on the academic merit of a manuscript, ensuring that no personal biases, affiliations, or external influences affect their judgment.

  • Transparency: All editorial decisions, including acceptance, revision, or rejection, are communicated clearly to authors with detailed feedback from reviewers when applicable.

2. Confidentiality

  • Confidential Handling of Manuscripts: All manuscripts are treated as confidential documents. Editors must not disclose the contents of a manuscript to anyone outside the peer review process, including personal or professional contacts, without the consent of the author.

  • Reviewer Privacy: Editors ensure that reviewer identities are kept confidential (when applicable), and that feedback is anonymized to maintain impartiality in the review process.

3. Conflict of Interest

  • Disclosure of Conflicts: Editors must disclose any conflicts of interest that may arise from personal, professional, or financial relationships with the authors or the subject matter of the manuscript. If a conflict of interest exists, the editor must recuse themselves from making any decisions regarding the manuscript.

  • Editorial Independence: Editors must maintain independence from any undue influence, ensuring that manuscripts are evaluated solely on their quality and relevance.

4. Fairness and Equity

  • Equal Treatment: Editors must ensure that all authors are treated equally and fairly, regardless of their institutional affiliation, gender, ethnicity, or nationality. Manuscripts are reviewed based on their academic quality and contribution to the field, not the background of the author.

  • Avoiding Discrimination: Editors should avoid discrimination in all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript evaluation and reviewer selection.

5. Peer Review Integrity

  • Fair and Rigorous Review: Editors ensure that manuscripts undergo a rigorous, impartial peer review process. They are responsible for selecting appropriate reviewers and making sure the review process is objective, transparent, and thorough.

  • Encouraging Constructive Feedback: Editors guide reviewers to provide constructive, helpful feedback that will aid in improving the quality of the manuscript. They also ensure that reviewers evaluate manuscripts based on academic rigor rather than personal preferences.

6. Ethical Publishing Practices

  • Plagiarism Prevention: Editors must ensure that all submitted manuscripts are checked for plagiarism. If any form of plagiarism is detected, the manuscript will be rejected and the author will be informed of the issue.

  • Data Fabrication and Falsification: Editors are responsible for rejecting manuscripts that include fabricated data or falsified research results, maintaining the integrity of the scientific record.

7. Handling of Unethical Conduct

  • Investigation of Ethical Violations: If an editor suspects unethical conduct (such as plagiarism, data manipulation, or other forms of misconduct), they must investigate the issue thoroughly. If misconduct is confirmed, appropriate actions should be taken, including retraction or correction of the article, and reporting the matter to relevant authorities.

  • Retractions and Corrections: In cases where an article is found to be seriously flawed or contains significant errors, editors must follow the retraction or correction procedures as per our editorial policies. This ensures that the academic record remains accurate and trustworthy.

8. Continuous Professional Development

  • Staying Informed: Editors should engage in continuous learning about the latest trends in academic publishing, research ethics, and relevant regulations. Regularly attending workshops, seminars, and training sessions on ethical publishing helps editors stay up-to-date with industry best practices.
